A Note on Olive Oil

I’m a huge believer in eating what those in the paleo community argue are good fats: coconut oil, organic butter, hemp, avocado, ghee, beef dripping and of course olive oil.

I’ve written about the fats I eat before, so I’m not here to belabour my arguments.

No, I’m just posting to warn readers that all extra virgin olive oils were not created equal. Olive oil is a huge business and rife with corruption in Europe, especially Italy. Much of the extra virgin is not extra virgin at all. Essentially, the mafiosos are “cutting” the oil to improve profit margins.

This is old news, but I’m always assuming that a lot of people don’t necessarily have their radar tuned to this kind of stuff.

I don’t doubt that other countries have their own corruption problems as well.

“But what can I do”, I hear you scream. Well, I do my own research. No one else will do it for me. There are so many sites out there that can give one a head’s up on good EV olive oils.

Another thing you can do is drink a good glug of your olive oil and really taste it. There are, again, websites out there that will help you know what to look out for when tasting.
